Have a Healthy, Happy Thanksgiving!

From our family to yours, we wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

For a holiday known to be all about the food, we want to share a few tips for staying healthy. Here are some ideas to have a healthy holiday while still indulging and enjoying the food, football and family time!

  • Get active. Make a point to get outside for a bit of fresh air. Take a family walk or toss around a football!

  • Eat breakfast. Many people decide to skip breakfast since dinner is such a big meal. This isn’t a great idea and may lead to overeating since you will be absolutely famished by the time dinner rolls around.

  • Hydrate! Staying hydrated is key. If you are thirsty, you may mistake that for hunger. If alcohol is a part of your celebration, drink a cup of water between beverages.

  • Use a smaller plate Using a smaller plate will help you eat less. If you fill up a bigger plate you may feel you have to eat it all when you may already be full.

  • Be smart with food choices. No need to restrict certain foods, enjoy in moderation! Have a dessert, but don’t overindulge. Fill up your plate with lots of vegetables and lean turkey. Enjoy carbs in moderation and choose the foods you like best.

  • Don’t stress The holiday is for enjoying good food and good company. If you are stressing about the food, don’t. Relax and have a great time.

We hope you will have a wonderful holiday!

Boost Winter Immunity with Chiropractic Care

Having a strong immune system is important for keeping you healthy. As we head into cold and flu season, it is especially important that your immune system is functioning at its peak.

Your immune system fights off viruses, toxins, colds, allergies and cancers. Your body’s response to small things can reflect a properly functioning immune system. The nervous system and immune system work together in order for healing and adaptation to occur. If you have any spinal misalignments, your immune system can be compromised. Having regular chiropractic adjustments can help boost the immune system.

What can cause problems with your immune system?

There are a few things that can cause dysfunction including autoimmune disorders, cancer, immunodeficiency disorder, allergies, stress.

Our nervous system communicates to our immune system. The central nervous system provides information so the brain can react. If you have misalignments of the spine (subluxations), this can cause poor communication between the immune system and brain.

How can Chiropractic care help?

Chiropractic adjustments will restore the misalignments in your spine. This will restore the communication between your brain and immune system. With a central nervous system that is functioning at its best, your immune system becomes equipped to defend your body from diseases, illness and infections.

Our patients at Pearson Chiropractic know that chiropractic care is beneficial for fighting off winter flu and illness. Making your health a priority through adjustments can help keep you healthy all season.

If you are struggling to stay healthy, visit us to see if you may have a misalignment causing interference to your immune system.

We are sad to see summer go, but fall is just around the corner. Summer is a common time for healthy lifestyles to get put on hold. From busy schedules to picnics and BBQs there is little time to workout and eating unhealthy is common. A new season is a new chance for a healthy you. Here are some tips for a healthy fall!

1. Go Organic! Organic foods will help you to avoid chemical pesticides that are in fruits and vegetables and other foods. If you can’t afford to buy all organic, go by the “dirty dozen and clean fifteen. “ Those you should buy organic includes strawberries, apples, bell peppers, spinach, and potatoes. Non-organic includes avocados, corn, peas, and onions.

2. Get Moving! Summer it is easy to head outside and be active- hiking, walking and biking are common in the sunny weather. As fall gets colder (and wetter!) it can be a challenge to stay active. Fall weather can still be nice, take advantage of the sunny days and still warm weather with a nice hike or trip to the park. Join a gym or a workout class, do a workout tape or walk an inside track to keep working out a part of your life even in the rainy season.

3. Try Something New! Fall is a wonderful time for a new hobby. Take up something you have always wanted to learn- sewing, boxing, cooking, soccer… the options are endless.

4. Watch TV Actively! The fall TV premieres can make many of us couch potatoes! Make watching your shows active by doing push ups or sit ups or lifting weights.

5. Get Adjusted! Summer activities can leave your spine misaligned. If you haven’t been to a Chiropractor in awhile, visit us. We can help with many health problems and help reduce any back, neck, or headache pain.

These tips can help keep you active and healthier as we enter the fall season. Wishing you and your family a great back to school season.

Back Safe Back to School

Your kids will be heading back to school in a few weeks and you pay be getting ready to purchase a new backpack for them. Your child may experience back or neck pain if the bag they are carrying is too heavy or worn incorrectly. Here are some tips for choosing the right backpack and wearing it in a way that will reduce the chance of back pain.

  • Skip the rolling backpacks. While this seems to be contradictory (rolling backpacks aren’t worn on the back!) many schools have stairs- especially upper grades and your child may then be forced to lift and carry the heavy bag up stairs.
  • Pack light. Only have your child bring the essentials. Leave heavy books that aren’t needed at home. Keep the weight 10-15% of your child’s weight.
  • Always wear two straps. This will help distribute the weight equally among both sides reducing strain.
  • Keep straps tight. Have the straps so that they are flat against your child’s back. Choose one with padded straps to avoid pain.
  • Pack heavy items on the bottom. This will keep weight distributed correctly.

Chiropractic Care & Your Thyroid

Thyroid & ChiroMany americans suffer from Thyroid problems and do not know that Chiropractic Care can help. Though Chiropractic care is not the root cure for these issues or their treatment it can support healthy thyroid management when partnered with a treatment plan from your doctor. Chiropractic care is founded on the principles of holistic care in that they focus on the function of your body as a whole by treating the core of our being, the musculoskeletal system. Holistic medicine means consideration of the complete person, physically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually, in the management and prevention of disease. It is underpinned by the concept that there is a link between our physical health and our more general ‘well-being’.

Lifestyle changes can also help enhance Thyroid health and quality of life.

Proper alignment promotes healthier function all around including spinal health and reduced back and neck pain, organ function, and even immunity. The treatment of thyroid conditions typically consists of more than just hormone replacement, most patients see best results when this is coupled with lifestyle changes. Often times this spectrum of complementary changes can be missed by a traditional health care practitioner such as a primary care doctor because they do not address nutritional and lifestyle changes necessary to see an improved quality of life for thyroid patients.

According to an in depth look at “The Role of Chiropractors in Thyroid Management” done at VeryWell.com.

Many doctors of chiropractic and other health care practitioners with similar education and qualifications have helped fill the void created by isolated thyroid replacement and TSH-only measurements.

Healthy Adjustments for the New Year

Happy 2017! Another year has passed us by and we are looking forward to the potential of things yet to come. Making “adjustments” for the new year is important for keeping your health on track. Although Chiropractic adjustments are one thing we suggest adding to your self care and wellness routine, there are many other things you can do to change your health. Here are a few simple health tips that can easily be done to get yourself off on the right track no matter what your resolutions are.

2016-12-28_1222

1. Start off your day with a healthy breakfast. Many of us skip breakfast or only enjoy a cup of coffee. This is a poor habit because your metabolism doesn’t get kick started first thing in the morning. It also can lead to overeating later in the day because you find yourself starving.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Oatmeal with almond butter, chia seeds and fruit
  • Eggs with veggies, salsa and avocado
  • Plain Greek yogurt with whole-grain granola and berries.

2. Eat mindfully. It can become a habit to eat while doing other activities- watching TV, working at your desk, etc. If you pay attention to what you are eating, you will pay more attention to what you are eating and stop when you are actually full. This will lead to healthier choices overall. Chewing slowly can also help you avoid overeating.

3. Cut back on sugar. Sugar is quite literally an addiction and one that can be hard to get rid of. According to the USDA, the average American eats 128 POUNDS of added sugar each year. This added sugar affects our bodies and our health in a big way. Sugar isn’t only in the typical “sugary” foods like desserts, donuts, chocolate, etc. It can be found in everything from canned spaghetti sauce to salad dressings. Here are a few steps to take to remove sugar from your diet.

  • Eliminate sugary drinks- soda pops, fruit juice, coffee/tea with added sugar.
  • Aim for no more than 24 grams of added sugar in 24 hours.
  • Read food labels. Many foods we buy can have shocking amounts of sugar. Check out the ingredient labels and lookout for other names such as glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dried cane syrup etc.
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners
  • These sweeteners can have many effects on the body including weight gain.

4. Get active. There is no one size fits all when it comes to workouts. Find something that works for you and that you get results from. Here are a few ideas:

  • Lift weights
  • Walk or run
  • Take an exercise class at the gym or YMCA
  • Swim
  • Play recreational sports
  • Do a workout tape at home

5. Get sleep. Making sure you have enough shut eye is important for daily functions! If you are having trouble falling or staying asleep, a routine can help you get into the habit of getting quality rest. Without proper rest you won’t be able to meet your health and fitness goals.
